Orange County-based piano songstress Emily Simonian’s is one of the better debut EPs you are going to hear. The singer/songwriter has been carefully crafting Pale Green for some time and the result is one of the early surprises of 2011.

Simonian has one of the best natural voices out there. Her songwriting plays to her strengths and on each track, she stays within herself and it sounds good.  With influences as singer/songwriter pop combined with jazz, or as she calls it “spazz,” Simonian takes the best elements of both genres on makes it her own on Pale Green. The singer’s booming voice has great range and sounds like a cross between Alicia Keys and early Mariah Carey, which if you take a glance at her, is very surprising. You wouldn’t expect a petit blonde to sound like some of the biggest names in R&B, but Simonian pulls it off with ease. Her voice beams of confidence and is definitely the standout element of the EP.

But nothing should be surprising about this stellar EP. On songs like “I Fold” and “Love Sick,” the singer shows great vocal range, without being pitchy or distracting.  Her voice, always in tune, sings each word with purpose, spitting fiery venom through the voice of a scorned lover. Pain and suffering have long been the hallmark of powerful songwriting and on Pale Eyes, it is no different.

With a fun sound, strong vocals and solid songwriting, Pale Green is a winner. By writing good music that showcases her talents, I anticipate to hear big things from Simonian in the future

Daniel Kohn

Ever since he first heard the opening chords to "Smells Like Teen Spirit," at the age of 11, Daniel Kohn has been hooked on music. Born in New York City, raised in the music hotbed of Long Island and currently residing in Los Angeles, Kohn has been writing since high school, when he realized he could get CDs for free. He's a sucker for '90s music, especially that from Seattle. Like a small minority of Americans, he likes football of the European variety, especially Liverpool. When he's not chasing down bands, you can find him at your local pub with a pint of Carlsberg, usually at ungodly hours cheering on his beloved Reds.
